Equipment Room Power & Cooling Upgrade

This project was a critical mechanical and electrical upgrade that would allow this client to add additional network equipment that could keep up with the growing demand of data use and storage. This project required several electrical upgrades including UPSs, PDUs, RPPs and underfloor equipment receptacles. We also installed new CRAC units and their associated condensers to provide additional cooling for the existing network space and electrical rooms. This project included both day work and maintenance window work.

As a part of this project, we installed new CRAC units and condensers in both existing electrical rooms as well as the mechanical space that provides cooling to the switch room. With the addition of the new UPSs in the electrical rooms, additional cooling was required to maintain the desired temperature for optimal performance from all the UPSs and electrical gear that serves the switch room. In addition to these smaller CRAC units installed in the electrical rooms, we installed three, 42-ton CRAC units. These were installed alongside the existing CRAC units and integrated into the existing teamwork mode and BAS system.

The electrical upgrades for this project included two new 600kva UPSs accompanied by a rack of DC batteries. Downstream from the new UPSs, we installed four new PDU's to distribute power to new and existing RPPs. This project required the installation of 14 additional RPP's in the switch room. Not only did we wire new RPP's to back to the new PDU’s, but we also had to rewire existing RPP's, with live traffic, to the newly installed PDUs to help distribute the electrical load more evenly. This process was completed during the maintenance window with 0 incident and 0 downtime for the client.
